Are Your Priorities Creating Focus or Fog?

Let’s talk about a common trap in roadmap planning: overloaded “strategic priority” buckets.
It usually starts with good intentions. You define a few high-level priorities like:
- “Enhance Platform Stability”
- “Improve Player Experience”
- “Increase Operational Efficiency”
Sounds focused, right?
But then something strange happens...
Everything gets stuffed under those priorities.
Suddenly “Improve Player Experience” has 17 different initiatives: UI fixes, new features, accessibility upgrades, performance tuning, live ops tools - you name it. All under one umbrella.
The priority that was supposed to bring focus now creates confusion.
Here’s why that’s a problem:
- Teams can’t tell what to work on first
- Progress becomes hard to measure
- Resources get spread too thin
- And sponsors lose the ability to drive delivery forward
What was meant to guide trade-offs ends up protecting everything—which means nothing gets the attention it deserves.
Here’s how to fix it:
Step 1 - Audit your strategic priorities.
If one of them has more than 5–7 initiatives under it, it’s likely overloaded.
Step 2 - Group related work into sub-themes.
If “Improve Player Experience” includes 5 major UX projects, 3 content systems, and 4 technical improvements—it’s time to break that up.
Step 3 - Reframe into sharper, more focused priorities.
Instead of one massive bucket, create focused drivers like:
- “Improve onboarding completion by 20% by Q2”
- “Reduce crash rate across live services to under 0.1% by September”
Step 4 - Assign clear ownership to each priority.
Every priority should have an executive sponsor who owns delivery and clears blockers.
Step 5 - Sequence work based on impact and capacity.
Don’t try to tackle all 17 things at once. Pick the top 3–4 and make real progress.
When strategic priorities are too broad, they fail to guide execution. But when they’re scoped correctly, they become a force multiplier.
