Is “Innovation” your priority? Or just a buzzword?

A lot of leadership teams proudly present strategic themes like “Operational Excellence” or “Innovation” or “Customer-Centricity.”

They sound great on a slide deck, and they look bold on posters in the hallway.

But the problem is they’re too vague to act on.

Teams nod along, but walk away unsure what to do.
They interpret the same “priority” in completely different ways.

👉 One team thinks “Innovation” means building new products.
👉 Another believes it’s streamlining internal tooling.
👉 Yet another is piloting AI automation.

All are valid ideas but all completely disconnected.
And when the message is unclear, execution fractures.

This is how strategy drifts and teams lose focus.
And eventually leadership wonders why things feel so chaotic despite having “clear priorities.”

Here’s the fix.

Run every strategic priority through this Five-Part Test.
To be usable, a priority must be:

  1. Impactful – Will it move a meaningful business needle?
  2. Strategic – Does it connect to a real goal or competitive advantage?
  3. Focused – Is it narrow enough to guide trade-offs and decisions?
  4. Time-bound – Does it commit to a specific result, by a specific time?
  5. Actionable – Could a team leader start planning work against it next week?

Instead of:
🛑 “Operational Excellence”
Try:
“Reduce customer support response time to under 4 hours by Q4 through automation and better self-serve tools.”

Now your teams know exactly what it means, why it matters, and how to act.

To lock it in:

  • Rewrite vague themes into measurable, time-boxed commitments
  • Assign an executive sponsor to each
  • Communicate them clearly and consistently across the org

When you do this well, strategy stops being abstract and  becomes a tool for execution.
Teams finally have a shared, usable map to follow.
